I Always Wanted to Paint BIG

The Last Hurrah 48" x 60" oil on canvas
When I was a college art student, I remember closing my eyes for sleep and seeing myself in a large studio space with giant canvases along the walls. This was an image that stayed with me through the many years that I was working other jobs, raising a family and treating my artist soul as a distant relative that I would like to visit if I got the chance.
A few years ago, now living as an artist and married to Paul George, an amazing artist and husband, I finally said out loud, "I always wanted to paint BIG." And, like a good therapist, he replied, "Why don't you?" I said, "I guess I'm afraid I can't do it."
Shortly after, my birthday rolled around and Paul came into the studio with a 4 x 5 foot canvas, saying, "Happy Birthday, Honey." And that was it. I went to sleep that night, visualizing the process I would use to cover all that canvas. It was game-changing. Since then I've created a number of large works and gained so much confidence in my ability to paint with big sweeping strokes and gesture. It's so liberating and affirming to follow through on the vision that I carried for so long.
